7 Steps to SEO Success: Why SEO Copywriting Services Thrive with SEO Audit Services

Writer at a laptop working on SEO copywriting services after a site audit

Picture an online shop selling handmade leather bags. The owner pays a copywriter for four blog posts a month. They read nicely. The topics were picked over coffee. Six months on, organic traffic is flat and nobody can say why.

Then someone finally runs a crawl. Half the product pages are blocked from Google by a setting left over from the build. Two posts are fighting over the same keyword. And the page for the best-selling bag has a title tag that just says “Product”.

The writing was never the problem. The writer was working blind.

That’s the whole case for buying SEO copywriting services and SEO audit services together, or at least in the right order. The audit tells you what’s broken and where the openings are. The copywriting fixes the words. Bought separately, each does half a job, and I’d argue the half that gets skipped is usually the one that mattered.

So this piece is about how SEO copywriting services and SEO audit services fit together, in which order, and what to check before you hand over money for either (because both markets have their share of cowboys, and the cowboys tend to sound very similar on a sales call).

What SEO copywriting services actually cover

Good SEO copywriting services produce pages that read well to a human and send Google clear signals about what each page covers. Service pages, product descriptions, category pages, blog posts, plus the small stuff people forget to budget for, like title tags and meta descriptions.

Keyword stuffing isn’t part of it. (Or shouldn’t be, in 2026.) The job is matching what someone searched for, answering it plainly and making the next step obvious. Google’s own guidance on helpful content says to create content for people first, and the better SEO copywriting services work that way without needing to be told.

Pricing for SEO copywriting services is all over the place, from marketplace gigs to specialists who’ll interview your sales team before writing a line, and while you often get what you pay for, the expensive option isn’t automatically the good one.

Someone will ask about meta keywords at some point, usually in the first meeting. We’ve covered whether to use meta keywords in 2026 separately, so I won’t go round that loop here.

And what an audit actually checks

SEO audit services look at a site’s health from the plumbing up: crawling and indexing, speed, mobile usability, internal links, duplicate content, redirects, structured data, backlinks. Many SEO audit services also include a content audit, which goes through every existing page and decides whether to keep it, improve it, merge it or bin it.

Tools do a lot of the grunt work. Google Search Console is free and flags indexing problems and the queries you show up for. A crawler like Screaming Frog’s SEO Spider maps the whole structure, and the free version crawls up to 500 URLs, which is plenty for most small sites. Choosing between tools? We compared Screaming Frog vs Ahrefs separately.

But tools only spit out data. Lots of it. The value of SEO audit services sits in someone reading that data and turning 400 warnings into a short list you can act on by Friday. Cheap SEO audit services often stop at the export, which is a bit like a mechanic handing you the diagnostic printout and walking off.

Why one without the other wastes money

SEO copywriting services without an audit are guesswork. You might commission a lovely new page while an old one targeting the same keyword already sits on page two, needing nothing more than a better intro. Or you publish great content on a site so slow that visitors give up before it loads.

An audit without writing is worse, in a way. It’s a 60-page PDF that sits in a shared drive. Plenty of businesses pay for SEO audit services, nod through the findings and never act on the content recommendations, because nobody has time to write. Sound familiar?

Put the two together and the audit becomes the brief, while SEO copywriting services carry it out. The content audit says which pages to fix first. Keyword research says what each page should target. The writer gets a clear job instead of “do us some blogs”.

Seven steps, in the order I’d do them

1. Technical audit first. Before SEO copywriting services write a single word, make sure Google can crawl and index the site. Look for noindex tags left over from development, broken redirects, slow pages and mobile problems, and expect decent SEO audit services to flag these right at the top of the report, because content on a broken site struggles however good it is (a bit like repainting a house that hasn’t got a roof).

2. Content audit. List every page with its traffic, rankings and conversions, then sort them into four piles: keep, update, merge, or remove and redirect. Pair it with your keyword research so you know which pages are worth saving. This is where the quick wins hide. A page sitting at position 11 might only need a sharper intro and a clearer heading to make page one.

3. Proper keyword research. Keyword research should give each page one main topic, so your pages stop competing with each other. Look at what people actually type, how competitive each term is, and what Google already shows for it, since if the top results are all guides, a sales page simply won’t break in, however lovingly it’s written. Our piece on AI for keyword research covers how newer tools can speed this up. Good keyword research also turns up the real questions customers ask, and those make cracking headings.

4. Clear briefs. This is the handover, where SEO audit services pass the baton to SEO copywriting services. A decent brief states the target keyword and related terms (straight from the keyword research), the search intent, the reader, the points to cover, the internal links and the call to action. Give a writer that and you get better work, faster. Give them “500 words on leather care” and you get filler. Every time.

5. Fix what’s there before writing anything new. It’s tempting to keep publishing (SEO copywriting services are often sold by the article, after all). But the bigger gains usually come from improving what already exists: rewriting weak service pages, tightening title tags and merging thin posts into stronger ones. If I were buying SEO copywriting services on a tight budget, I’d put the whole first month into rewrites.

6. Then fill the gaps. Once existing pages are sorted, go back to the keyword research and find topics you don’t cover yet. Questions no page answers. Comparisons your competitors rank for. New pages should link to and from related ones, so nothing’s left stranded.

7. Measure, then audit again. Track rankings, organic traffic and, above all, enquiries or sales from the pages you changed, using Search Console and GA4. Then book lighter SEO audit services every few months, or do a quick check yourself, because sites change, competitors move and Google keeps tinkering with its systems.

What that might look like for a real firm

Say a regional accountancy firm with a 60-page website decides to try both. In the first fortnight, SEO audit services cover the technical side and a content audit of every page. The findings might show three service pages that barely describe the services, a dozen thin blog posts from 2019, and no page at all for a service the firm earns good money from (and which, the keyword research later shows, people search for every month).

Weeks three and four go on keyword research and briefs. Then SEO copywriting services rewrite the three service pages first, because those sit closest to enquiries. Next the thin posts get merged into two solid guides, with redirects from the old URLs. Finally the missing service page gets written from scratch, shaped by the keyword research.

Nothing exotic. Just SEO copywriting services and an audit, done in the right order. After three months the firm re-checks rankings and enquiries for the changed pages, runs a lighter content audit and plans the next batch.

Hiring either without getting burned

With SEO copywriting services, ask for samples in your industry or something close to it. Watch whether the writer asks about your customers or just wants your keyword research spreadsheet. The better SEO copywriting services want to understand your product, your tone of voice and who’s buying before they type anything. Very cheap per-word rates on technical subjects? Be wary. Mistakes cost trust.

Ask any provider of SEO copywriting services how they use AI, too. Research and outlines? Fine. Raw AI output tends to read flat, though, and Google’s spam policies target content churned out at scale mainly to manipulate rankings.

With SEO audit services, you want a prioritised list. What to fix first, and why. Not 400 warnings exported from a tool. Good SEO audit services will also tell you what not to bother fixing, which is weirdly rare and very useful. Ask for a sample report, check whether keyword research and a content audit are included or only technical checks, and ask whether they’ll talk you through the findings. Honestly, a 30-minute call is often worth more than the PDF. If you’d rather have ongoing guidance than a one-off report, our piece on SEO consultant services explains how consultants usually work.

The mistakes are boringly predictable. Publishing new posts while old ones cannibalise each other. Skipping keyword research and writing about whatever seems interesting that week. Measuring success by word count. And treating SEO copywriting services as a one-off purchase, when prices, products and search results keep changing underneath you.

If I had a limited budget, I’d spend it on SEO audit services first and fewer articles. Sounds backwards. It isn’t. Ten pages written to a good brief will usually beat forty written to a hunch.
